About the Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet was introduced to the world in the 1960's by Dr. Robert C Atkins as a low carbohydrate diet plan, but one which differed from the others significantly.

Dr. Atkins knew that people whom had previously embarked on other low carbohydrate diets tended to lose muscle mass as well as fat tissue, so to counter this Dr. Atkins devised a diet plan which recommended eating higher amounts of protein and saturated fats to keep muscle mass from dwindling, whilst at the same time allowing the fat to be shed.

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of glucose (energy), although the body can refine glucose from stored body fat. The body knows carbohydrates are the best and most economical source of glucose therefore usually never looks any further. The Atkins Diet works by lowering the body's carbohydrate intake to such an extent that the body's metabolism begins to utilise the body's fat cells for glucose to a greater extent. The result is a person will lose weight fast.

The reason why the Atkins Diet is so popular is its simplicity and the effortlessness by which it can be adopted by any person no matter how obese. Some people have a food addiction and find it extremely difficult to use other diets which simply recommend eating less. Food cravings can be so strong a person may struggle to summon the willpower to follow through a diet and lose weight. The Atkins Diet allows a person to continue to eat enough volumes of food to satisfy their cravings, but allows them to lose weight at the same time, making it somewhat of a phenomenon for many people.

The Atkins Diet works on the premise only trans-fats are bad for a person's health whilst saturated fats aren't nearly as bad as they are made out to be. It is also proven that lower carbohydrate intake has great coronary benefits.
